Candle magic is one of the most popular forms of magic spells, especially for beginners.
Spells utilize the power of the flame, representing the element of fire, which represents creative force, transformation, passion, and vitality.
Fire is considered a powerful tool of both destruction and creation in various traditions.
Among the Vikings, they believed that fire had the power to move things between the physical and the spiritual worlds.
According to Odin’s law, people could take anything burned on their funeral pyre with them into the afterlife.
In the Christian faith, fire is a symbol of the presence of God, for example, in the form of the burning bush that appeared to Moses.
It is this belief in the spiritual power of the fire element that underpins candle magic spells.
There are a variety of different ways to conduct candle magic depending on your tradition and preferences, but most practices will include variations of the following steps.
Step One: Prepare Your Space

All spells work best when they are conducted in a ritual space especially prepared for that purpose.
This is because spells are all about calling and directing energy, so you want a space in which you can control the energy, including banishing negative energy that might undermine your spell, and preventing energies from interacting in unexpected ways.
Ideally, you already have a sacred space that you can use for your candle spells.
If not, you can create one specifically for the purpose.
Find a space that you can clear of other objects and where you won’t be disturbed.
While it is ideal to have a whole room, most people need to choose a corner of a private room, such as a bedroom.
Clear the space of all other objects, give it a thorough clean, and then clean the energy of the space by burning cleansing incense such as white sage, Palo Santo, frankincense, or sandalwood.
You can also place cleansing crystals such as tourmaline, selenite, Citrine, and clear quartz.
You should then border off your space.
You can do this physically, for example, by drawing a line in salt or chalk. You can also do this symbolically, for example, taking an athame (ritual knife) or an energy cutting crystal, such as back tourmaline or obsidian, and drawing the boundary line in the air.
Finally, place objects representing the elements in your space. In the northern hemisphere earth is usually placed in the north and can be a bowl of earth or a plant, air is in the east and can be potpourri or incense, fire is in the south and can be a lantern or candle, and water is in the west and can be a small water vessel.
Invert the directions if you are in the southern hemisphere.
Step Two: Gather Your Tools

Before entering your ritual space to conduct your spell, you will need to gather your spell tools, as you shouldn’t bring anything into your ritual space that is not needed for your magic.
First, you will need a candle.
Some people like to make their own, but that is not necessary. You can buy natural candles made from materials such as soy wax, beeswax, coconut wax, and rapeseed wax.
Taper candles are often the best choice, but anything that inspires you is the right choice for you.
Many people believe that it is important to choose a candle in the color that represents the type of magic you are working, for example, a spell for love, wealth, or health.
The meanings of colors are culturally specific, so you need to choose what is right for you, but many Wiccans make the following color associations:
- White – protection, new beginnings, healing
- Black – banishing negative energy, unblocking stuck energy
- Red – lust, good luck, strength
- Pink – love, romance, forgiveness
- Blue – communication, creativity, justice
- Green – good luck, abundance, success
- Brown – understanding, balance, trust
- Purple – divination, wisdom
- Orange – career, legal affairs
- Yellow – intellect, learning, clarity
- Gold – male energy, happiness, enlightenment
- Silver – female energy, astral projection, intuition
- Light Blue – patience, friendship
- Grey – balance, peace
You may also choose to anoint your candle with a meaningful essential oil, such as citronella for healing, eucalyptus for concentration, and rose for love.
You can do this as part of the ritual, so take your oil with you.
You will also need a candle stand, something to light your candle, and a pen and paper.
You will also want a cloth or a sack to store your candle in later.
If you have a Book of Shadows, you will want to bring that with you as well, to record your practice.
Step Three : Meditate on Your Purpose

You are now ready to conduct your spell, so enter your sacred space with your ritual tools.
Make yourself comfortable in the center of your space and then call on whatever deities you believe in and thank them for their support.
If you don’t identify with any gods, you can just mentally call the type of energy that you would like to work with into the space with you.
Once you feel grounded in your space, spend some time meditating on what you want to achieve.
Before you do this, light your candle and place it in front of you in your space so that you can meditate while focusing on the flame.
If you plan to anoint your candle with essential oil, do it now before lighting it.
You can then start your meditation while focused on the flame. Visualize your desired outcome in as much vivid detail as possible.
Don’t just imagine what it will look like, but also what it will feel like.
When you have the image clear in your mind, it is time to give it physical form. In the simple candle magic spells, this means writing it down on a piece of paper.
This can be a few simple words, an affirmation, a drawing, a poem or spell that you have written yourself, whatever works for you.
Some people choose other flammable objects to represent their desired outcome, such as poppets of a collection of herbs.
Step Four : Release Your Intentions

Once your intentions are fully formed, both physically and mentally, you are ready to release your spell into the world.
The process is simple.
While holding that visualization in your mind, you will burn the paper representation of your intention, setting it free into the world in the form of smoke.
You will want to maintain the visualization through the process of burning the paper and watching the smoke rise away.
You may choose to receive a spell before burning the paper to add extra force to it within your tradition.
I recommend looking at grimoires for forms of works that align with your system of belief.
If you are looking for a very simple but compelling spell, consider the following:
Candle of power, candle of might
Do grant my wish upon this night
May power flow from candle fire
And bring to me my heart’s desire
My words are strong, my cause is won
I now declare this spell is done.
Once you have burned your spell, you should sit with your candle in a meditative state for as long as seems right.
Some people choose to wait until the candle burns all the way down, but it is not necessary.
When you are ready, thank the universe for the gifts that it has bestowed on you and for future blessings, and blow the candle out.
Step Five : Finishing the Spell

When you are done with the spell, you should collect the remnants of your candle and any ash left behind, because these are sacred artifacts of your craft.
Wrap them in a cloth or place them in a bag for storage.
Some people choose to include other items in the bag to augment the spell, items that should be in the sacred space with you during the casting.
This could include a crystal or an item linked to what you want to achieve. Some practitioners prefer a jar or other receptacle.
You can then thank the energies that you subscribe to for their support and leave your sacred space.
Store your magical artifact somewhere safe until the results of the spell are felt. At some point in the future, you can bury the bag, returning the items to the cycle of life.
This is one of the reasons that it is important to choose natural items when preparing for a spell, so that they can be properly reintegrated into the natural system.
